1st Grade Jim Dine Hearts

We all know Valentine's Day is coming up but simple hearts just wont do.  Looking at  Jim Dine's hearts were a MUST. Each student made their own heart patterns to create  symmetrical hearts. We used oil pastels on velour paper. I am a new teacher and have not had a chance to order my own supplies so I am working with what is left. Oil Pastels on Velour paper = success. I think they are so stinking cute and the loved making them. 

1st Cup Cake Collages

I have been completely inspired and maybe a little obsessed with looking at other people's blogs. I even forget where I got this idea from. Being a bran new art teacher it is so great looking at what other people have done, then adapting it for my classroom. Why re-event the wheel when it is already done so awesomely!!!! 

In this lesson we read If You Give A Cat A Cupcake. Then looked at artist Wayne Thiebaud.

We used wallpaper and other materials to collage the most delicious cupcakes a 1st grader could imagine. Yummy! 

Abstract Circles- 1st Grade

This was my first lesson painting with 1st grade. While I love the results man was it stressful to get 25 little first graders at the end of the day to all be on the same page... I will have to mentally prepare and eat lots of chocolate before my next painting lesson with these kiddos :)

Shape Monsters

In this lesson we identified six basic shapes: oval, circle, triangle, rectangle, square and diamond. Then we did step by step directions to complete our monsters. Each student was able to pick which one of 6 basic shapes they used for each part of the monster. Students either chose the primary or secondary colors to color in their monster. A cute way for students to remember the primary colors is to sing it to the Farmer in the Dell. Red, blue and yellow, red, blue and yellow. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow. I used same strategy with the secondary colors too. They still are singing it :)
